As you can easily discover through an internet search, HiringThing is an online recruiting system that helps companies post jobs online, manage applicants, and hire great employees. However, we’re a very unique company — we’re 100% virtual, meaning there is no formal “corporate office” and all our employees work remotely across the U.S.
Since our team is completely remote, many questions are often raised. “How do you all communicate with each other?” “Do you ever meet in person?” “How do you all create an effective work/life balance if you’re always at home?” This article will address these great questions and other aspects of our company. Welcome to a day in the life of a HiringThing employee!
Communication is always important, but it’s especially crucial when employees work remotely. Our team keeps in daily contact through a cloud-based communication tool called Slack. Within Slack, we have group channels designated for each department. Each of us can write messages to one person directly, to several people at once, or even to the entire team. Since our team is spread throughout different states, Slack also allows us to show when we’re online, and it tracks each employee’s specific time zone.
Just like in a traditional office setting, we have regularly scheduled meetings. We use video conference tools, such as Google Meet, to conduct face-to-face meetings. Implements like Slack and Google Meet help our team stay connected and updated with what’s going on internally.
“Do you ever meet in person?” Of course! Our annual and regional team meetings provide in-person time we don’t normally have throughout the year.
At our annual team meetings, which involve our entire team, we meet for one full week in a central location to review strategic objectives, department-specific objectives, product roadmap, and more. We also use this time to connect, bond, and get to know each other better. These meetings usually occur during the fall, and we try to pick a different location each year. Thus far, we’ve collaborated in Portland, Oregon; Breckenridge, Colorado; and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Our regional team meetings are opportunities for specific departments to meet and review cross-departmental strategic objectives. In 2017, our marketing/sales teams met in Newark, New Jersey, and in early 2018, our client services/support teams met in Los Angeles, California.
We strongly encourage all our employees to maintain a healthy work/life balance. They are given the flexibility to rearrange their work schedules to allow time for important personal or family matters that may arise. Our unlimited PTO plan for eligible full-time, exempt employees allows them to schedule family vacations, getaways, etc. We want our employees to stay rejuvenated and productive, so a healthy work/life balance is something we take seriously!
Unlike other companies, we pride ourselves on being completely transparent with all our employees! They are always looped in on important company decisions, financial updates, and general news. In addition, everyone is encouraged to contribute in a hands-on manner, allowing them to be directly involved in the overall strategic direction and vision of the company. We love to keep our employees informed about what’s going on, and it has proven very advantageous. The bottom line is that our team members make better decisions every day because they know exactly what we are trying to accomplish as a company thanks to that transparency.
